5 Best Sex Positions For A Bad Back.

Posted by Bliss Team on

Back pain impacting on sex is a common problem.

A 2014 study by Waterloo University examined the spinal movement of 10 couples engaged in sex. The couples were asked to perform five different sex positions and variations of those sex positions. The study used infrared and electromagnetics, the researchers to find out what the spinal movement in sex positions were most comfortable and where the stressors where on the spine. From there a list of positions that worked or didn’t work, comfort-wise was created.

Back pain impacting on sex is a common problem with around 84% of men and 73% of women who suffer from lower back pain say that it results in a significant decrease in the frequency of sex. Whether it is pain or medications interfering with the frequency of sex with back pain it is important that you speak to your medical professional about what is right for you and your condition.

In the study, 10 couples volunteered to have sex while wearing motion capture devices along their spines.  Sex tech being put to great use, the same sensors used in the creation of smooth human movement in video games, in the development of recommended positions and techniques.

Recommendations for sex positions depending on the type of back pain you have.

There are 3 types of back pain that affect sex:

  • Flexion intolerant means that pain is increased by leaning forward, like when you bed over to pick something up.

  • Extension intolerant means that if your arch your back or bend backwards pain gets worse.

  • Motion Intolerant is when pain increases when the spine moves away from its neutral position, lying down, standing straight, or moving in general.

Positions For Women

  • Flexion Intolerant – Spooning, Kneeling/Doggy Style

  • Extension Intolerant - Missionary

  • Motion Intolerant - Missionary

Positions For Men

  • Flexion Intolerant – Doggy style (partner on their knees), Missionary, Reverse Missionary/Partner on top.

  • Extension Intolerant – Spooning, Reverse Missionary/partner on top,

  • Motion Intolerant – Squatting,  Reverse Missionary/Partner on top

Get back to the enjoyment of sex without the stress on your body, mind or relationship. Being able to continue to enjoy pleasure in your life even after the injury is important. Explore options, talk to your health professionals and find what works for you.

Spooning. Generally spooning as a sex position is pretty gentle and comfortable, and great for that lazy morning sex session. It is important to note that as comfortable as it is it doesn’t suit every kind of back pain.

Doggy Style. The motion capture showed that this position activates the ‘giver’s’ abdominal muscles and buttocks, rather than the back muscles. If your back pain is muscle-based, this might be a good position to try. If you are the receiver and get pain with deep penetration but it works for back pain, you could try an Ohnut to cushion from deep penetration and associated pain.

Missionary Positions/ Reverse Missionary – You can use pillows, or other supports to increase comfort when using this position. You can use them to support your back, change the angle of your hips or even support your legs.
