5 Tips for Temperature Play

Posted by Bliss Team on

Who has used ice or hot wax in the bedroom? We see you, it is common to experiment with things like this. These may seem like small experiments but temperature when you take into account all the possibilities available, this sensation-focused part of kink can add variety and colour to your play. Temperature play is also a fantastic add on to pretty much any type of play you are interested in, including blindfolds and bondage.

What is temperature play?

Temperature play can mean a whole host of hot and cold items including objects or substances you already have at home, like hot sauce, lube, or chocolate syrup. Some sex toys can be warmed up or cooled to use in temperature play, like glass our metal dildos or metal clamps. Temperature play can extend to your environment, a warm deck, a sauna or if you live in a snowy area, you could try getting frisky in the snow.

Here are 3 tips and ideas for experimenting with hot and cold play.

  1. Always be Prepared - Always plan for the worst-case scenario while striving for the best.  It is important to have the necessary tools on hand just in case you run into trouble or someone gets too overwhelmed. Some examples may be - playing with candles, have a fire extinguisher or if you are playing with cold have something that can warm your partner up quickly.
  2. Get the Right Gear - Get the right gear, this kind of play is not something to do without forethought and planning. Let’s say you want to use candles, you need to make sure you have the right type of candles. Some candles are made from wax that burns at high temperatures and will scar the skin, perhaps even permanently. You need to make sure you buy candles that burn at lower temperatures and designed for purpose. Ensure any materials that you are using can be safely taken to the high or low temperatures you are interested in, like metal, glass or stone. You can’t use your standard plastic vibrator for this sort of play.
  3. Test your Gear - It is only polite to test the tools you are wanting to use on your partner on yourself first. That way you know how they feel, you understand the sensations you are creating. If you want to drizzle hot lube on their body, do it to yourself first. Whatever you choose if it’s too much for you, chances are it could be too much for them too.
  4. Stay Close - No matter what you should never leave your partner unsupervised during play for extended periods. If you do decide to step away to create the illusion of abandonment but it is important to stay nearby and make sure you check on them.
  5. Aftercare - Aftercare is IMPORTANT. How you do aftercare can make or break an intimate encounter. Temperature play can be simple or intense and involved and everyone reacts to sensation play differently. What may seem simple and only a little painful for you but may be overwhelming and challenging for your partner. So set aside time for aftercare. That means doing everything you can to make sure everyone involved feels safe, respected and cared for. It also makes good memories which may increase the possibility of more play and experimentation in the future and that is always a good investment.
