What is anal sex?

Posted by Bliss Team on

Butts we all have one and whether you know it yet or not just like your genitals, your anus can be very sensitive and can be an enjoyable part of sex.

So, what is anal sex? It is when an object, penis, or sex toy (designed for anal sex, no not all toys are suitable for anal sex) is consensually inserted into the anus (yours or someone else’s) during sex. It doesn’t have to be full penetration it can range from playing externally around the anus with a finger to inserting fingers, sex toys, or a penis.

Externally and internally the anus is a very sensitive area. Anal sex is no different than having sex with any other part of your body.  If you are new to anal play then just like any other new activity, it is best to go slow, take your time and explore the sensations to see if you like it. If you are curious but nervous the best way to start exploring anal play can be to explore it by yourself.

If you are interested in touching your partners or if they have mentioned they are interested in you touching it, even if you have played with their anus before, you always need to get their consent before you do. Always check that it’s ok with them first.

Remember it is ok if it is or is not your thing. Just like other sexual behaviors, some people find it pleasurable and some people don’t.

Remember having or enjoying anal sex does not make you gay. A lot of heterosexual people enjoy anal sex, people with different sexual orientations enjoy anal sex. It is about pleasure, not labels.

It is important to note that like any sexual activity hygiene is important. A lot of people get hung up on the potential mess involved with anal. Before anal sex, there are certain cleaning techniques you can use, but it's always good to keep in mind that you are, after all, sticking something in your bum. The more comfortable you get with a possible bit of poop, the less shocked you'll be if it happens.

That said, if you want to take extra precautions beyond a baby wipe or soap and water, you can use an enema or anal douche for a deeper, more comprehensive clean.

Just like vaginal sex, STIs can be passed on during anal sex. Using a condom is a very important part of staying safe. Many STIs have no symptoms, so, however, you identify if you’re having anal sex you should get tested for STIs.

Always use lube! Two main reasons why are; it lessens the friction and makes the experience more pleasurable; without lube, the friction created will equal tears within the anus which increases the risk of infection and STI’s.

One last quick tip is to ensure that you are very aroused, so go heavy on the foreplay. You need to relax so that anal sex feels pleasurable and being highly aroused is one way to do that, breathing helps and learning to unclench those muscles is useful too, but your heightened level of arousal will make the most difference.
