Masturbating May Boost Your Sex Drive According to Research

Posted by Jodie West on

Experts believe that over time, masturbating can increase your sex drive. Research is limited in comparison to most other areas of health research which is a pity because of the health benefits of masturbation. There are researchers such as Dr Nicole Prause that are looking into the health benefits and changes in the brain during masturbation and other forms sex.

What the research says

Here is some of the conflicting research on whether masturbating raises or lowers your testosterone over time:

  • Das & Sawin in a 2016 study examined adults over age 57 found that men who masturbated more often had higher levels of testosterone. This link continued over a five-year period. For the women in the study, masturbating more frequently did not have any significant effect on testosterone levels.
  • Randolph, Zheng, Avis, Greendale, Harlow in a 2015 study found that middle-aged women that masturbated more often tended to have higher testosterone levels, but the study did not measure whether masturbating more often actually increased testosterone. So, the women in this study may have had higher testosterone levels before masturbation.
  • Exton, Kruger, Bursch, Haake, Knapp, Schedlowski, Hartmann in a small 2001 study showed the opposite. They found that men who didn't have sex or masturbate for three weeks had higher levels of testosterone. The study also found that when men masturbated, their testosterone remained relatively stable before, during, and after their orgasm. While another small study by Jiang, Jiang, Zou, Shen in 2003 showed that men who didn't masturbate for an extended period had a 45% rise in testosterone levels on the seventh day of the study.
  • A2014 study showed that people with a higher sex drive masturbated more often, but it's difficult to know whether masturbating increased sex drive or if a higher sex drive lead to masturbating.

The studies seem to reinforce that the idea of use it or lose it. More studies are needed on this subject, but it does seem to be that regular masturbation is associated with increased sex drive and vice versa. How your testosterone levels change long term due to masturbating more or less is yet to be established through research. Although there is some evidence that masturbating more often can raise your sex drive.

If you have concerns about your sex drive or would like some help exploring your feelings and experience of sex and masturbation it may help to talk to your doctor or a sex therapist.
